Year B – Proper 10 – Ephesians 1:3-14

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.  In love he predestined us for adoption through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.  In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.  In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.  In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

Summary – Paul barely takes a breath in this passage, as verses 3-10 only have two sentences!  There is an onslaught of rich truth in these lines about God’s bountiful grace in His predestination and adoption all for His praise.  Christ’s coming and dying was the revelation of God’s plan from all ages finding its locus in His person in the fullness of time to unite all things in Christ.  And in Him, we have inherited eternal life, and been sealed with the Holy Spirit.

Insight – Have you ever been excited for a friend to come to your house?  One question I used to ask my mom when I was younger was, “Mom, is it time yet?”  I would ask over and over, “Is it time?”  There is usually a certain time that we agree on for friends to come over, right?  The people of Israel cried out “How long?” for many years as they waited for the messiah to come.  Finally, at the right time, Jesus came.  St Paul says in this passage that Jesus came at just the right time, in order to unite all things in Him, things in heaven and things on earth.  Thanks to Jesus coming, we on earth are united to God in heaven!

Child Catechism – Who is the guarantee of your salvation?  The Holy Spirit.

Discussion – Why didn’t Jesus come at a different time?  What are some other things in heaven and on earth that Jesus united by his coming?

Prayer – Father, thank you for sending your son in the fullness of time to bring about your great redemption.  Please cause us to be holy and blameless through the Holy Spirit, to the praise of your glory, Amen.
